Between a Rock and a Hard Place

We’ve all been there – that moment in our lives when we are faced with challenges that test our limits. It makes us feel vulnerable and separated from others. Maybe we feel like no one understands our issues. Or we are just too tired or don’t have the time to explain ourselves. Even more, maybe we just don’t feel comfortable sharing with others because they may have others they’re dealing with or some other reason.

When this happens, we tend to go into a downwards spiral. Sometimes it’s helpful to get others to be around and keep us in check. Other times, others suck us in the downwards spiral even further. Misery loves company after all.

We need to be cautious and keep our focus on our journey. Here’s some things you can try next time you’re between a rock and a hard place…

Between a Rock and a Hard Place

INTERNAL CHECKS

  • Check your attitude: Your attitude in life should be separate from the situation you’re in – it’s just another chapter, it will pass
  • Give yourself time to think: Is there something you can do about the situation? Are there things that are outside your control? Reacting without thinking about your options may not be the best idea… ever. Need help coming up with a plan of attack? Read this article.

EXTERNAL BALANCES

  • Surround yourself with positive people: You need accountability partners to make sure you are not going into a downwards spiral BUT you need those people to be someone “outside looking in”. You should not surround yourself with others who may be struggling with the same issues and don’t have a good handle on the situation. (Group therapies usually includes an “outsider” – the therapist)
  • Find a way to de-stress: Yes, acceptance to the fact that you are dealing with a difficult situation means also allowing yourself to cope with the difficult situation. Just remember that de-stressing should be positive activity – soaking your misery over cocktails may drown out the noise but it’s temporary, and it takes away your ability to “Give yourself time to think”

Finally, remember – if life were easy, we’d all be bored. If life didn’t throw curve balls at us, we wouldn’t know to appreciate the peaceful times in our lives. Every situation teaches us something. It’s how we handle the situation that defines who we are.
